Women's Crew Officially Announced as NCAA Automatic Qualifier

INDIANAPOLIS – Brown University women's crew has officially gained an automatic berth into the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships set for the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif., from May 29-31, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.
Brown will compete in the NCAA Championships for the 19th straight year and stands as one of three programs, along with Princeton and Washington, to take part in all 19 championships since the event's inception in 1997. Under head coach John Murphy, the 2015 Ivy League Coach of the Year, the Bears have won seven NCAA titles, with the most recent occurring in 2011.
The Bears check in as the No. 4 seed in the first varsity eight and will compete in heat four on Friday, May 29 at 9:40 a.m. The second varsity eight stands as the No. 3 seed and will take part in heat three on May 29 at 10:10 a.m. while the varsity four comes in as the No. 2 seed and will race in heat two on May 29 at 10:40 a.m.
The team championship, this year hosted by the Pac-12 Conference, is composed of 22 teams. Eleven conferences were awarded automatic qualification and the remaining 11 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the championship field. Teams qualifying for the championship as an automatic qualifier or as an at-large are required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. For the I Eights, II Eights and Fours, all 22 boats will be seeded into four heats.
Brown will enter the championship coming off its ninth Ivy League title all-time and its first since 2008 after winning the first varsity eight race at the Ivy League Championship on Sunday. The Bears garnered the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy for winning the first varsity eight race – which decides the Ivy League title – while also capturing the second varsity eight, A varsity four, and B varsity four en route to its second consecutive points trophy at the Ivy Championship.
