PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's basketball team recognized five student-athletes for their contributions to the program and announced the 2015-16 captains during the team's annual awards banquet on March 31.
At the banquet, Head Coach Sarah Behn announced the team's captains for the 2015-16 season – Natalie Ball (Orlando, Fla.), Jordin Alexander, and Ellise Sharpe.
Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) was honored with the team's Most Valuable Player Award as Brown's leading scorer with 15.0 points per game, an average that ranked fifth in the Ivy League last season and earned the junior Second Team All-Ivy accolades. She posted 20 games of at least 10 points, including a career high 31 points against Penn on Feb. 14, the most points scored by a Bear since 2000.
The Most Improved Player Award went to freshman Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) after the rookie appeared in all 28 games, earning starts in eight of the final eleven contests. Steadily improving throughout the season, Martin's notable performance came against Penn on Feb. 14, as she posted 16 points and 13 rebounds for her first career double-double. Martin also tallied a career high 17 points against Columbia on Jan. 31.
Earning the newly founded Rookie of the Year Award was rookie Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.). White appeared in 25 games for the Bears, earning starts in 15 of those contests while posting 7.4 points per game and a team best 5.8 rebounds per game. Her 1.32 blocks per game ranked fourth overall in the Ivy League. White posted a career high 15 points against Harvard in the season finale on March 7 and hauled in a gaudy 18 rebounds against Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 21.
The Unsung Hero Award went to Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) after the junior consistently displayed determination and tenacity on the court. Sharpe earned Ivy League Co-Player of the Week honors on Feb. 9 after registering 19 points in three consecutive contests and ranked third on the Bears with 43 steals.
The Harriet Sheridan Leadership and Coaches' Awards went to senior captain Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.). The senior set the all-time program record with 222 career three-point field goals and also claims the team's best performances at the free throw line for a season (.921) and a career (.862). The 92.1-percent success rate from the charity stripe was good for fourth overall nationally. On Feb. 28 against Princeton, Bikofsky became the school's 18th player to hit the 1,000-point milestone, finishing 17th on the all-time scoring list with 1,018 points.
