PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team handed out its team awards at the annual banquet held at the Brown Faculty Club on Wednesday night.
In addition to the awards, junior diver
Sazzy Gourley was recognized for his appointment as President of Brown's Undergraduate Council of Students. Gourley had served as Vice President of the UCS since last April. The Charlotte, North Carolina native was also awarded the team's
Ken Miller Scholar-Athlete Award, an honor given to a team member who, through dedication in the classroom and in the pool, best exemplifies what it means to be a scholar-athlete.
Senior Jeffrey Strausser (Lafayette, Calif.) was awarded the Joe Watmough MVP Award after posting a team-high 170.75 points this year. Strausser was also a member of four of five relay teams at this year's Ivy League Championships.
Sophomore diver Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) garnered the Dave Sias Diving Award for his outstanding performance, dedication and contribution to the program in the diving events throughout the season. Schlafer's performances in 2014-15 earned him a spot at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships back in March.
The Rookie of the Year Award was given to freshman Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) for his exceptional season in the distance events. Casey shattered the previous team record in the 1,000 Freestyle that had stood since 2008 with his performance in day two of the Ivy League Championships on February 27.
The Thomas Temple Coaches' Award, an honor recognizing the qualities of dedication, personal self-improvement, and sportsmanship, was given to senior Adam Voss (Muncie, Ind.) as voted on by the coaching staff.
Senior captain
Brian Barr (Martinsville, N.J.) earned the
Win Wilson Service Award for exemplifying unselfishness through commitment and hard work in the pool, in the community, and for the team.
Barr, Alex Pascal (Longmeadow, Mass.), William Rosenberg (Strongsville, Ohio), Strausser, and Voss all earned their white "B" sweaters after competing in four years of competition.
