New Haven, Conn. – Sophomore Jeff Cimbalista scored four goals to lead Yale to a 16-10 Ivy league win over Brown Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Brown sophomore attackman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY), the nation's leading scorer, netted five goals to lead all scorers.
Brown drops its second straight Ivy game and falls to 8-3 on the season, 2-2 in Ivy play, while Yale improves to 9-2, 2-2 in the Ivy League.
"I'm proud of our effort today, but nobody in this program will accept this result," said Brown head coach Lars Tiffany. "Give credit to Yale for being the best team today, but we will be back."
With five goals, Molloy moved into fifth place in Brown single-season goals, now with 49 goals on the season. Bears' junior middy Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY) added three goals.
Brown junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) made 10 saves, while Bulldogs' goalie Eric Natale had eight saves.
In addition to Cimbalista's four goals, Yale's Conrad Oberbeck and Eric Scott added three goals each. Ben Reeves had two goals and two assists for the Bulldogs.
The intensity of the game was on display as early as pre-game warm-ups when a barrage of taunts from the entire Yale team greeted the Brown squad as they took the field.
But it was Brown who came out of the gate quickly with Molloy helping the Bears jump out to a 4-2 lead with his third goal at the 6:51 mark of the opening quarter. Yale goals by Oberbeck and Scott knotted the game, 4-4 after one quarter.
The Bulldogs took their first lead early in the second quarter when Oberbeck scored for a 5-4 advantage. Yale continued with its methodical approach and had goals by Tyler Warner and Reeves to grab a 7-4 lead at intermission, while keeping the Bears off the scoreboard.
In a game of possessions, Brown lost the battle of the face-off x in the opening 30 minutes, with Yale capturing 8-of-12 face-offs.
Yale opened up a 8-4 lead in opening seconds of the third quarter when Cimbalista scored off the face-off to cap a 5-0 Yale spurt.
Molloy scored two straight goals for the Bears to cut Yale's lead to 8-6 with 12:51 left in the quarter.
Yale answered with consecutive goals by Cimbalista to pull ahead by a 10-6 margin.
Goals by Caputo and junior Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) got Brown back in the game, 10-8, early in the quarter, Yale's Scott scored with one second left in the quarter to put the Bulldogs back up by three goals, 11-8.
The late goal by the Bulldogs put the Bears back on their heels, with Yale scoring the opening four goal of the final quarter to grab a seven goal advantage, 15-8, on a tally by Scott with 5:00 remaining.
Brown is back in action again on Tuesday, April 14, traveling across the city of Providence to battle Providence College in an evening contest. Face-off at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex is 7 pm.
