PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A second half surge, led by Temi Fagbenle's 16 points and 18 rebounds, powered the Harvard Crimson to a 76-69 win over the Brown women's basketball team on Senior Night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Brown concludes the 2014-15 campaign at 10-18 overall and 4-10 in Ivy play, while the Crimson even their records to 14-14 (7-7 Ivy).
In her final contest, Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) tossed in eight points and hauled in nine rebounds. The senior captain finishes her career atop Brown's career three-point percentage list (.397), a record previously held by Emilie Troupe since 1998-99. Bikofsky also boasts the program's best performances in single-season free throw percentage (.921) and career free throw percentage (.862).
For the second consecutive night, Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) paced the Bears with a team high 15 points, a career high for the freshman who averaged 7.4 points per game this season.
Junior Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) deposited 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, while Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) and Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) each chipped in with nine points, with Alexander adding a career high six assists. She finishes the season as the team's leading scorer with 15.0 points per game.
After the Crimson scored the game's first four points, Brown's senior lineup gave the Bears a spark with a 10-0 run thanks to two buckets from senior Nelly Weledji (Overland Park, Kan.). Fellow senior Christine Rush (Hinsdale, Ill.) started the second game of her career, posting three points and one rebound in seven minutes of action.
White's tenacity on the offensive glass paid dividends, as the rookie netted eight points, three rebounds, and three blocks in the opening 20 minutes.
After the Crimson evened the game at 14 on Shilpa Tummala's trey, the teams see-sawed back and forth for the remainder of the half until White's trey from the corner gave the Bears a 34-29 lead entering the locker room.
The Bears came out strong in the second half, grabbing their largest lead of the game at 43-34 on Natalie Ball's layup with 17:17 to play. From there, the Crimson took control and outscored the Bears by a 42-26 margin in the final 17:17.
With Brown clinging to a 49-48 lead, the Crimson took the lead for good on Fagbenle's layup with 9:55 to play. Harvard grabbed its largest lead of the contest at 12 on AnnMarie Healy's put-back with 3:05 on the clock. The Bears cut the deficit to six with 49 seconds to play on White's jumper from the elbow, but that's as close as the Bears would come as the Crimson iced the game from the free throw line.
Harvard shot 54.5-percent from the field in the second half and connected on 6-of-13 attempts from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes. The Bears posted a season high six blocks, with White matching her career high of three.
