ITHACA, N.Y. – Abby Bunting (Wellesley, Mass.) recorded three points and goalkeeper Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) turned away a career high 14 shots, but an early hole plagued the Brown women's lacrosse team during a 14-6 loss at Cornell on Saturday.
Brown falls to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red improves to 6-2 and 3-0 in Ivy play with the win. Cornell extends its winning streak over Brown to 16 games with the win at Schoellkopf Field this afternoon.
Bunting paced the Bears with two goals, an assist, and a team-high eight shots, while Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Bears on Saturday. Roddy faced a barrage of shots, with 28-of-33 attempts from the Big Red landing on goal, as the senior hit a personal milestone for saves in a game.
Lindsay Toppe led the way for Cornell with four strikes, while Sarah Hefner, Catherine Ellis, and Emily Tripodi each netted a pair for the Big Red. Toppe added two assists to run her season total in points to 27.
The Bears found themselves in a hole early, as Kristy Gilbert and Catherine Ellis each found the back of the net to give the host Big Red a 2-0 lead 3:09 into the contest. Brown cut the deficit in half after Toy fed Yuna Hur (Stony Brook, N.Y.) right in front of the Cornell cage for the freshman's 10th strike of the season.
Cornell countered with a 4-0 run after Hur's goal over a span of seven minutes to take a 6-1 lead, before Emma Dahle's (Wynnewood, Pa.) drive to the left post cashed in to make it a 6-2 game.
The teams swapped goals, as Toy connected for her team-leading 12th of the season, before the Big Red ended the half with two more markers to take a 9-3 into the locker room.
The hosts started off the second stanza with another 4-0 run before Brown closed the contest with three of the game's final four tallies. Junior Dianne Vitkus (Skaneateles, N.Y.) notched her second goal of the season prior to Bunting's pair of goals in the waning minutes.
The Cornell pressure led to 18 Brown turnovers on Saturday, including just a 50-percent success rate (9-18) in clears for the Bears. Renee Poullott made eight stops in goal for the Big Red.
Up next, the Bears remain in New York to battle Colgate on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m.
