
Fencing's Trio of Women Complete Day One Action at NCAAs

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Christine Whalen and sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos each notched five wins in women's sabre to lead Brown University fencing on the first day of women's competition at the 2015 NCAA Championships at Ohio State's French Field House on Saturday.
Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), competing at the NCAA Championships for the third time, and Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy) each notched 5-10 records in the first three rounds to stand in 21st and 20th place respectively. Freshman Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) registered a 3-12 mark in women's epee to sit in 23rd place.
The trio will continue competition in rounds four and five beginning at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Championship bouts will start at 1:45 p.m.
Tondato Da Ruos tallied 50 touches scored to 66 touches received for a -16 indicator over 15 bouts. She posted a 3-4 record in the first round. Whalen logged a -20 indicator with 48 touches scored and 68 touches received. She went 2-2 in round three. Ferguson posted a -16 indicator behind 54 touches scored and 69 touches received.
As a team, the Bears rank 14th out of 25 teams.
On the men's side, junior Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) finished 12th in men's epee, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors, and sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in 16th in men's sabre in competition which took place on Thursday and Friday.
