Fencing Concludes Competition at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Christine Whalen and sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos each tied for 19th in women's sabre, and freshman Signe Ferguson came in 23rd in women's epee on the final day of competition at the 2015 NCAA Championships at Ohio State's French Field House on Sunday.
Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), competing at the NCAA Championships for the third time, and Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy) each posted an 8-15 record over 23 bouts while Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) finished with a 7-16 mark.
In women's sabre action, Whalen and Tondato Da Ruos each registered a -24 indicator, placing the two teammates into a tie. Each fencer went 3-5 on Sunday, and both registered 75 touches scored to 99 touches received over the competition's five rounds.
In women's epee, Ferguson posted a 4-4 record over rounds four and five on Sunday. Over the course of the tournament, she logged 86 touches scored to 102 touches received to close competition with a -16 indicator.
As a team, the Bears finished 13th out of 25 schools, tying for the best team finish in program history, which also occurred in 2011 and 2012.
On the men's side, junior Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) finished 12th in men's epee, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors, and sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in 16th in men's sabre in competition which took place on Thursday and Friday.
