PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) scored a pair of first-period goals, but Colgate responded with three tallies in the third period as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Raiders, 4-2, on Senior Day in Saturday afternoon's regular season finale at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown drops to 8-18-3 overall and 5-14-3 in the ECAC, snapping a six-game unbeaten streak, while Colgate improves to 19-11-4 and 11-7-4 in the conference. Brown, the No. 11 seed, will visit No. 6 Harvard in the first round of the ECAC Tournament in a best-of-three series starting on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m.
Sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 34 saves in the loss, while Charlie Finn stopped 32 shots for the Raiders.
Brown jumped out to the early lead when Lorito scored just 3:13 into the contest. After Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) forced a turnover, Lorito scooped up the loose puck and rifled a shot past Finn for the 1-0 lead.
Colgate answered right back at 5:48 when Kyle Baun capped a tic-tac-toe scoring play from Tyson Spink and Tylor Spink to even the game at 1-1.
Brown stormed back at 10:31 when Lorito notched his second tally of the period. The senior raced down through the neutral zone toward the goal and beat Finn with a wraparound shot to give the Bears a 2-1 advantage at the first intermission.
The two teams both had a hard time generating quality chances throughout most of the middle period, but the Bears outshot the Raiders by a 12-9 margin in the stanza. Colgate had a strong opportunity with 4:30 remaining when Baun charged on a breakaway, but Ernst made the save and then denied Tylor Spink on the rebound to preserve the one-goal lead.
Jake Kulevich scored at 2:55 to even it up at two goals apiece. Senior Joey de Concilys (St. Catharine's, Ontario) seemingly swiped the puck off the goal line in time, but the call was reversed after video review. Tyson Spink scored 17 seconds later to push the visitors in front, 3-2.
Tim Harrison completed the three-goal third period when he found the back of the net at 10:34. Brown went with the extra skater for the final 3:54 after pulling Ernst, but could not find a way past Finn as the Raiders held on and secured the No. 4 seed and first round bye in the ECAC Tournament.
Seniors Lorito, de Concilys, Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, Mass.), Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) and Kyle Quick (Buffalo, N.Y.) were honored prior to the game for their four years of dedication to the program.
Brown will open a best-of-three series at Harvard on Friday night.
