PHILADELPHIA – Four Penn Quakers each scored in double figures en route to a 75-58 win over the Brown women's basketball team on Friday night at the historic Palestra.
Brown falls to 10-15 (4-7 Ivy), while the Quakers improve to 17-7 (8-2 Ivy) to maintain their stranglehold on second place in the league standings.
Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) led the Bears with 13 points, four steals, and now sits just three points shy of becoming the program's 18th all-time 1,000-point scorer. Natalie Ball (Orlando, Fla.) netted 12 points and posts her second consecutive game in double figures for the Bears.
Freshman Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) hauled a team high eight rebounds, also deposited four points in the process.
After the Bears took an early 6-5 lead at the under-16 timeout, the host Quakers responded with a 12-0 run, keyed by Kara Bonenberger and the long distance shooting of Kathleen Roche.
Trailing 20-8, the Bears got buckets from Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.), Ball, and Bikofsky to draw within six and force Penn head coach Mike McLaughlin to spend a timeout.
Penn rushed back out to a 13-point cushion with 5:34 left on Roche's trey, before Brown grinded its way back to within nine entering the locker room on Bikofsky's three.
A Bikofsky three got the Bears back within eight early in the second half before the Quakers seized control with an 8-0 run to go up 46-30. Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) halted the Penn run with five points over the span of two possessions to bring the deficit down to 14.
The Quakers success from the field continued in the second half, especially from three, where they shot 50-percent overall (7-14) from long range on Friday.
Sophomore Emily Dinger (Sunnyvale, Calif.) cashed in with her first points of the season, a trey with 1:46 to play.
Stipanovich paced the Quakers with a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Michelle Nwokedi, Roche, and Bonenberger each scored in double figures.
Up next, Brown visits undefeated #14 Princeton tomorrow night at Jadwin Gym beginning at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed lived on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network.
