Women's Lax Upends Bryant, 12-8, Retains Ocean State Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) and Yuna Hur (Stony Brook, N.Y.) each netted hat tricks as the Brown women's lacrosse team retained the sixth annual Ocean State Cup with a 12-8 victory over Bryant on a frigid morning at Stevenson Field.

The Bears claim their season opener to improve to 1-0, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-1 with the loss. Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) made seven saves to record the win before giving way to Victoria Holland, who made two stops in the final 3:31. Bryant netminder Samantha Santeramo turned away 10 Brown shots in the loss.

Marissa Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.), the sister of former lacrosse standout, Bre Hudgins, added two goals in her collegiate contest, while Emma Dahle (goal) and Lindsey Repp (assist) each found the scoresheet in the their debuts.

After Shannon Burns put Bryant up 1-0 nine minutes into the game, a 7-0 scoring run for the Bears to close out the half gave them a six-goal cushion after 30 minutes of play.

Toy got the Bears on the board with a free position conversion before Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.) and Hur followed with strikes to put the Bears up 3-1. Hur's strong drives to the net created a lot of chances, as the freshman recorded a team high eight shots. Gion finished the morning with two goals and an assist for the Bears.

Brown seized control in the final minutes of the half as Toy scored with 10 seconds remaining and Hur added another with just 0.8 ticks left on the clock.

With the Bears up 11-2, a 5-0 run for the Bulldogs, led by Lauren Descalzo's fourth goal of the contest made things interesting in the final minutes. Hudgins ended the Bryant charge with an impressive move to goal with 2:26 remaining to put Brown up 12-7.

Nicole Britton rounded out the scoring with 36 seconds left for the Bulldogs.

Up next, the Bears will travel to Iona on Friday, Feb. 27, beginning at 3 p.m.
