PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Sam Donovan gave Brown University women's hockey a 1-0 lead with a goal in the second period, but Princeton University scored three goals in the third period to take a 4-1 win on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
The Bears (5-22-1, 2-18-1 ECAC) played evenly with the Tigers (15-11-2, 13-7-1 ECAC) for the better part of the contest before the visitors added a pair of late goals, including an empty-net tally.
Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded her fourth goal in the last five games and increased her point total to six over that stretch. Seniors Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) earned assists on the goal.
Brown took its 1-0 lead 13:14 into the second stanza as Donovan positioned herself in front of the crease and tipped a point shot from Vella into the back of the net on the power play.
Senior Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) started the play, carrying the puck into the Bears' offensive zone. She then slid the puck to Robson who fed it to Vella for the shot.
Princeton tied the game at 1-1 with under two minutes to play in the second period as Morgan Sly scored the first of her two goals. Sly slotted home a shot after a drive from Brianna Leahy on the man advantage.
The Tigers took a 2-1 edge at the 7:45 mark of the third period as Emily Achterkirch slipped a shot into the goal. Sly registered her second goal of the game with less than four minutes to play, and Jaimie McDonnell added an empty netter in the waning moments.
Brown sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 32 saves, including 14 in the second period, while Princeton net-minder Kimberly Newell stopped 21 shots in the win.
Prior to the game, junior Hunter Davis (Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned recognition as Brown's recipient of the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year Award from the ECAC. Davis carries a 4.0 grade-point average with a concentration in political science.
Next, Brown concludes its regular season tomorrow at 4 p.m. when the Bears host No. 5 Quinnipiac in Meehan Auditorium.
