PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin made 40 saves, and Brown University women's hockey nearly upset No. 5 Quinnipiac University before falling 1-0 on a late goal in the third period at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday afternoon.
In the final regular season game for both teams, the Bears (5-23-1, 2-19-1 ECAC) stymied the visiting Bobcats (24-7-3, 15-5-2 ECAC) for most of the game and generated a number of chances but could not score a goal.
Quinnipiac's Taylar Cianfarano netted the game-winning goal with 5:33 remaining on assists from Emma Woods and Nicole Connery on the power play.
The Bears almost broke the deadlock midway through the third period as senior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) worked the puck in the offensive zone. Classmate Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) then pounced on the puck in the slot, but her bid was turned away.
Brown continued to apply pressure after allowing the goal as freshman Katie Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) and junior Ariana Rucker (Oakton, Va.) placed back-to-back shots on goal from close range. A shot from junior Kelly Micholson (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) in the final seconds just missed the mark.
Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) stopped 18 shots in the first period, 10 shots in the second, and 12 in the third for her third game this year with 40 or more saves. The Bobcats' Chelsea Laden registered 12 saves in the shutout.
Senior Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.) created one of the contest's best opportunities late in the first period as she deked past a Bobcat defender and forced a sliding save from Laden. The play also resulted in an eventual power play for the Bears after officials called for interference.
For the game, Brown led in blocked shots, 18-9, and registered eight of their 12 shots in the final period. Quinnipiac held a 41-12 advantage in shots on goal.
Cianfarano logged the game's only goal as she gathered a loose puck in the slot and slipped a shot into the goal.
At the conclusion of the game, Brown honored the five members of the team's senior class – Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario), Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.), Robson, Vella, and Yang – for their hard work and dedication to the program.
