PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Sarah Robson and freshman Sam Donovan each scored a goal to bring Brown within one goal, but Brown University women's ice hockey fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) netted a goal to pull the Bears (5-21-1, 2-17-1 ECAC) within 2-1 midway through the first, and Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) tipped home a shot late in the third, but the visiting Engineers (6-22-4, 4-15-1 ECAC) held on for the win.
Robson and Donovan each recorded two points on a goal and an assist while senior Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.) and junior Alli Rolandelli (Minnetonka, Minn.) each posted an assist.
Brown sophomore goalie Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 27 saves and allowed two goals. RPI goaltender Kelly O'Brien stopped 22 shots in the win.
Facing a 2-0 deficit midway through the second stanza after a first period goal from the Engineers' Lauren Walsh and a second period tally from Alex Gruschow, Robson brought life to the Bears with her coast-to-coast goal 11:30 into the second – less than a minute after RPI's second goal.
After Rolandelli and Donovan worked to return possession to the Bears on the play, Donovan slid the puck to Robson in the hosts' defensive faceoff circle. Robson then took the puck the length of the ice and slipped a shot past O'Brien from inside the crease.
The Bears remained within 2-1 through much of the third period before Hannah Behounek registered an empty-net goal with 4:45 to play. With Brown on the power play, the Bears opted for an extra attacker coming out of a timeout before the Engineers netted the 6-on-4 goal.
Brown countered with an extra attacker just over two minutes later as Donovan redirected a shot into the goal with 2:33 remaining. Robson sent a shot on target from the right side, which Yang and then Donovan tipped to beat O'Brien.
For the game, RPI held a 30-24 advantage in shots on goal while Brown led seven to four in blocked shots.
Next, Brown concludes its regular season with home games against Princeton (Feb. 20, 7 p.m.) and No. 5 Quinnipiac (Feb. 21, 4 p.m.).
