
Women's Hockey Blanks Union, 2-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Brown women's hockey team shutout Union, 2-0, with goals by junior Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) and sophomore Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) to pick up and ECAC win on Friday afternoon at Messa Rink. Sophomore Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) recorded her first-career shutout with an impressive 38 saves in the contest. The victory also marks the first road shutout for the Bears since Dec. 8, 2012, when they also blanked Union, 1-0.
The two teams skated to a 0-0 score in the first period, with Brown (3-8-0, 1-4-0 ECAC) holding a narrow advantage in shots, 12-11. Each team was unable to convert on the power play in the stanza, with Brown going 0-for-2 and Union (0-11-4, 0-5-2 ECAC) going 0-for-1.
Conway got the Bears on the board with a power-play tally at 13:22 of the second period. Junior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) and freshman Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) assisted the score. Carey now has an assist in each of her last three games.
Swanstrom added a security goal for Brown, with a power-play score at 4:17 of the third, giving Brown a 2-0 lead. Senior Kelly Micholson (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and freshman Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) teamed up for the helpers.
The third period saw Brown's defense fight off a penalty to preserve the shutout win. Landry contributed 14 saves in the final period.
Union's Melissa Black registered 28 saves in the game. Landry now has a 0.81 goals against average and a .972 save percentage in her last three games played.
Overall the Bears were 2-for-5 on the power play while their penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 in fighting off infractions. Brown now has at least one power-play goal in its last five games.
The Bears will close out the first half of the season tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 5, at Rensselaer for a 3:00 p.m. game.
