
Women's Hockey Resumes ECAC Play at Union and RPI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team will compete in a pair of road ECAC match-ups this weekend, starting with a game at Union on Friday, Dec. 4, and ending with a contest at Rensselaer on Saturday, Dec. 5. Puck drop for both games is set for 3:00 p.m.

SCOUTING UNION
The Dutchwomen enter Friday's game looking for their first win of the season as they are 0-10-4 overall and 0-4-2 in the ECAC. Union recently lost a non-conference contest at Providence, 4-1, on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Senior Kathyrn Tomaselli leads the team in goals with four, and is tied for the team lead in points with five. Senior Jessica Kaminsky also has five points on the season, with two goals and three assists. Melissa Black has appeared in 12 games as Union's goalie, starting 11. The Freshman has posted a 2.41 goals against average and a .943 save percentage.
SCOUTING RENSSELAER
RPI will enter Saturday's game after hosting Yale in a conference game on Friday, Dec. 4. So far on the year the Engineers have played to a 4-8-2 record with a 2-3-1 mark in the ECAC, and look to snap a five-game winless streak (0-4-1). Rensselaer's signature win on the year came against No. 4/4 Clarkson, in a 2-1 triumph on Nov. 7. The Engineers also played a tight contest at No. 9/9 Harvard, but fell 2-1 on Nov. 13. Last weekend RPI tied New Hampshire 3-3 in the first game of the series (Nov. 27) and dropped the series finale, 2-1 (Nov. 28). Senior Alexa Gruschow leads the team in points with 11 and has a team-high eight goals. Her eight goals also put her tied for fourth in the ECAC. Senior Mari Mankey is the squad's assists leader with seven on the season to go along with three goals (two game-winners) for 10 points. Freshman Lovisa Selander has appeared in net 13 games, starting 12 and has contributed a .928 save percentage and a 2.29 goals-against average. The rookie currently ranks second in the ECAC in saves with 371.
BROWN VS. UNION LAST SEASON
The Bears went 0-1-1 against Union last season, with a 3-2 loss at Union (Dec. 6) and a 3-3 tie at Brown (Feb. 13). Sophomore Sam Donovan scored in both games, while sophomore Katie Swanstrom scored her first-career goal in the second game. The 3-3 tie was Brown's last overtime game and last tie, as the Bears have not played in an extra-minute contest yet this year.
BROWN VS. RENSSELAER LAST SEASON
Brown dropped a pair of games versus RPI last season with the first one at RPI, 7-5 (Dec. 5), and the second game at Brown, 3-2. The first game of the series was the last time the Bears scored five or more goals on the road. All five goals were power-play tallies and all came in the third period, when the Engineers had a 7-0 lead. Senior Kelly Micholson started the scoring and was followed by junior Maddie Woo and sophomore Samantha Swanstrom for the returning Bear scorers. Swanstrom's goal was the first goal of her collegiate career. In the second game, sophomore Sam Donovan scored Brown's second goal while on the power play in the third, but the Bears could not mount a comeback.
CURRENT BROWN GOAL LEADERS VS. UNION AND RPI
Sophomore Sam Donovan leads this years team in goals against Union (2), with one goal in each of her first career games played against the Dutchwomen. Junior Maddie Woo leads the current Bears in goals versus RPI, also with two, on Dec. 5 2014 and Feb. 7, 2014.
LAST TIME OUT
Brown was defeated by Providence College, 6-1, in the 21st Annual Mayor's Cup on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Schneider Arena. The Friars scored a goal in each the first and second period to take a 2-0 lead into the final period. Providence gained a 3-0 lead early in the third and then sophomore Sam Donovan scored for the Bears, bringing the score to 3-1. Freshman Bridget Carey and junior Erin Conway recorded the assists. The Friars then added three more goals en route to their victory. The game's first four goals were all power-play tallies.
NEXT UP
The Bears are off until New Year's Day when they travel to Princeton for a 7:00 p.m. game. Brown will compete at Quinnipiac the following day, Saturday, Jan. 2, in a 4:00 p.m. game.
BEARS HEAT UP IN NOVEMBER
Brown scored a total of 11 goals in November and recorded 28 of its 30 points this season in the month. Sophomore Donovan recorded five of her six points on the year in the stanza, all of them being goals. Freshman Leah Olson recorded her first career points in the month, and finished November with two goals and three assists. Junior Maddie Woo registered all of her points on the season (5) in the month, with one goal and four assist. Seniors Kelly Micholson (0-2-2) and Alli Rolandelli (0-1-1), junior Erin Conway (0-1-1), sophomores Samantha Swanstrom (1-1-2) and Katie Swanstrom (1-0-1) and freshmen Jenna Hewitt-Kenda (0-1-1) and Cara Najjar (0-1-1) also recorded their only points of the season in November.
TOP OF THEIR GAME
Freshman Bridget Carey, sophomore Sam Donovan and junior Maddie Woo have been together on the top line in eight of Brown's 10 games and have produced 16 of the team's 30 points. Donovan leads the Bears in goals (5) while Woo has a team-best in assists (4).
UNDERCLASSMAN SCORING
Brown's freshmen and sophomores make up 70% of the team's scoring, including 92% of the Bears' goals (11) and over half (55%) of the team's assists (10).
