
All 14 Bears Score, Women's Hoops Cruises to 114-28 Win over Mount Ida

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – All 14 Bears checked into the scoring column, and Brown University women's basketball cruised to a 114-28 win over Mount Ida College on Thursday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center, scoring over 100 points for the first time in program history.
"I think tonight was a good night for us to work on execution and for us to get some kids some minutes and confidence," head coach Sarah Behn said. "I'm very happy for some kids that got an opportunity that they hadn't gotten yet and did well in it."
The Bears (3-0) outscored an opponent by greater than 40 points for the first time since an 82-38 win over Brooklyn College on January 16, 1991 with their victory over the Mustangs (0-4). Brown opens the year at 3-0 for the first time since beginning the 1990-91 season with a 4-0 record.
The hosts out-rebounded their Division III visitors out of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, 61-33, and held the Mustangs to 10 points in the second half on 3-of-32 shooting. The Bears connected on 25-of-40 shots (62.5 percent) in the final 20 minutes.
Every Bear scored at least four points, and every student-athlete played between 11 and 19 minutes in the contest.
Freshman Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) led all scorers with 13 points to go with five rebounds while sophomore guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) recorded 12 points and a career-high eight assists.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Melissa Heath (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) posted 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed five boards. Junior Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y) notched 12 points while sophomore forward Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) nearly totaled a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.
Senior Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) added nine points and five boards, freshman Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) tacked on eight points, and sophomore Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) compiled seven points, four boards, and three blocks.
Senior Natalie Ball (Orlando, Fla.), junior KJ Veldman (Spirit Lake, Iowa), and freshmen Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ohio) and Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) each corralled five or more rebounds. Sophomore Savannah Johnson (Fort Washington, Md.) logged four points, four assists, and three rebounds, and senior Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) finished with six points.
Brown opened up the game with a 13-5 lead behind a 3-pointer from Sharpe and a fast-break layup from Musgrove. The hosts closed the quarter on a 17-0 run to take a 31-9 edge after the first period. Sharpe and Reilly netted six and five points respectively during the run.
Spanning the first and second quarters, Brown scored 26 straight points to garner a 40-9 edge. As part of the 26-0 run, Reilly led the Bears with seven points. Brown held a 52-18 lead at halftime and gained a lead as large as 36 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The hosts opened the third quarter with a 19-0 run to earn a 71-18 advantage with 5:24 to play in the stanza. Musgrove paced the Bears with six points in the run. Brown extended its lead to 83-24 after three quarters.
The Bears began the fourth quarter outscoring the Mustangs 29-2 to push their lead to 86 points at 112-26 with 2:20 to play.
Next, Brown plays the third game in its four-game home stand with a match-up against Morgan State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
