
Sam Donovan's Hat Trick Powers Women's Hockey Past Sacred Heart, 6-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey sophomore Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) netted a hat trick to lead the Bears past Sacred Heart, 6-1, to close out its five game home stand at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday. Eight different Bears recorded a point in the game.
Donovan started the game's scoring, with her second goal of the year at 9:52 in the first period. Donovan received the puck from junior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) who intercepted a pass from the Sacred Heart (0-3-0) defense and passed it to Donovan who was crashing to the net. Brown's (1-6-0) offense was firing on all cylinders, recording 23 shots in the stanza compared to Sacred Heart's four.
In the second period, sophomore Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) collected a cross-ice pass from freshman Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) to record her first goal of the season 1:08 into the period. Freshman Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) also tallied an assist on the play. Sacred Heart pulled within one of Brown (2-1) when Taylor scored at 16:03 after she received the puck after a shot by Cassandra Hanlon that was blocked by a Bear defender.
Brown's picked up momentum in the third period scoring four goals en route to its 6-1 win. Sophomore Katie Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored the first goal of the period at 2:23, on an unassisted play where she beat the Pioneers' goalie, Nicole Magee. Freshman Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season at 5:55 for Brown's fourth goal of the game. Woo and senior Kelly Micholson (Elk Grove, Ill.) assisted the goal. Donovan registered her second goal of the game while Brown was on the power play at 17:11 when she dove and redirected Woo's shot for the score. Woo and Olsen recorded the assists. Donovan's last goal came just before the conclusion of the game, at 19:49, when she received a feed from freshman Jenna Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver, British Columbia).
The three goals on the day is a career-high output for Donovan and the first Brown hat trick since January 24, 2012 (Sarah Robson '15). Woo also recorded a career-high in the contest, with her three assists. Olson, Najjar and Hewitt-Kenda recorded their first collegiate point in the game, with all three rookies collecting assists.
Junior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) and sophomore Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) split time in net for the Bears. Elvin stopped 11 shots while Landry turned away nine. Magee made a total of 43 saves for Sacred Heart.
The Bears recorded a season-high 49 shots compared to Sacred Heart's 21. Brown also registered its first power-play goal of the year, going 1-for-7 on the power play, while the team's penalty kill warded off all six penalties.
The Bears embark on a seven-game road stand, starting Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21 with a series at RIT. Friday's game against the Tigers will start at 7:00 p.m. while the series finale on Saturday will begin at 3:00 p.m. Brown will have road contests through Saturday, January 2.
