
Volleyball Takes Two Sets in Extra Points, Falls at Harvard, 3-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University volleyball rallied to win sets two and three in extra points but fell at Harvard University in five sets, 3-2 (25-16, 25-27, 25-27, 25-21, 15-12), on Friday night at the Malkin Athletic Center.
The Bears (8-7, 2-2 Ivy) staved off set point on multiple occasions to gain overtime victories in the second and third frames before the host Crimson (7-7, 3-1 Ivy) countered with a win in the fourth stanza and held off a final charge from the visitors in the deciding set.
Junior Payton Smith (Atheron, Calif.) and freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) each recorded 13 kills with Smith hitting .346 in the match and Stillwell notching double-figure kills for the 12th time in 15 matches.
Senior captain Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) tallied 14 digs and nine kills while sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) registered a match-high 20 digs. Cairo and Frost compiled double-digit digs for the 14th and 12th times respectively on the season.
At the setter spot, senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) distributed 23 and 22 assists apiece.
For Harvard, Corinne Bain posted a triple-double with a match-best 16 kills, 24 assists, and 12 digs. The Crimson compiled 17.5 blocks as a team.
The hosts took the opening frame, 25-16, using an 11-4 run to turn a 9-8 edge into a 20-12 lead. Smith landed four kills in the set while Cairo made six digs.
The Bears responded in set two, gaining a 14-10 advantage midway through the frame. Harvard remained in contention to take a 2-0 set lead, earning set point at 24-23. Brown scored twice in answer and notched the frame's last two points to win, 27-25. Through two sets, Smith terminated on eight kills with no errors on nine attempts.
Brown followed with another 27-25 win in set three, again persevering when facing set point. The Bears gained a 17-11 edge after a 5-1 run and still led at 21-18. The Crimson pulled ahead at 23-22 and held set point at 24-23 and 25-24, but Brown countered with the frame's final three points.
The two sides remained tight through the majority of set four with the score knotted at 18-18 late in the period. Harvard used a 7-2 run to claim a 25-20 win in the stanza.
The Crimson opened the final frame with a 4-0 lead and built a 13-5 advantage before the Bears made one final rally. Brown trimmed its margin to 14-12 behind a 7-1 run prior to Harvard garnering the 15-12 set win.
Next, Brown continues Ivy play at Dartmouth tomorrow at 5 p.m.
