
Volleyball Battles in Set One, Falls at Dartmouth, 3-0

HANOVER, N.H. – Brown University volleyball and Dartmouth College battled deep into extra points in set one, but the host Big Green took the opening frame and won in straight sets, 3-0 (30-28, 25-17, 25-18), on Saturday night at Leede Arena.
The Bears (8-8, 2-3 Ivy) held a lead as large as seven points in set one before the Big Green (7-7, 4-1 Ivy) rallied to take the stanza in overtime and rode that momentum to two more set wins.
Junior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with 10 kills while senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) registered a team-best 16 assists. Freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added seven kills.
Sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched a team-high 16 digs, and freshman Francie Holte (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied a season-high 10 digs.
In set one, Brown captured an 18-11 lead after scoring seven unanswered points. Dartmouth worked its way back into the set, knotting the score at 21-21 with a 10-3 run.
The two teams combined to reach set point six times in the opening frame with the Bears holding the advantage at 24-23, 25-24, and 28-27. Dartmouth gained set point at 26-25 and 27-26 before scoring the period's final three points to take the 30-28 win.
The Big Green held a slight 15-13 edge midway through set two prior to using a 6-0 spurt to grab a 21-13 lead on the way to the 25-17 win.
Dartmouth led 12-8 in the first half of the third frame, and although Brown pulled within 16-14, the Big Green maintained an edge of at least three points for the remainder of the set in the 25-18 win.
For Dartmouth, Paige Caridi, Emily Astarita, and Kaira Lujan compiled 16, 11, and 10 kills respectively. Kayden Cook distributed a match-high 21 assists, and Zoe Leonard logged a match-best 18 digs.
Next, Brown begins a four-match home stand with a non-conference contest against the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
