PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey team was defeated by Penn, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Goldberger Field in an Ivy League contest. The Bears took a 1-0 lead into halftime but were unable to hold off the Quakers as they added two goals in the second half. Brown moves to 6-9 on the season and 1-5 in the Ivy League while Penn improves to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

"We played with heart and created numerous opportunities to score," said head coach Jill Reeve. "Unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize. We're looking forward to tomorrow's match against Lehigh."

In the first half, Brown took a 1-0 lead with junior Jaclyn Torres' (Andover, Mass.) first goal of the season at 4:22. Torres scored close range when she collected her own rebound on her initial shot.

Penn opened up the second half scoring two quick goals, at 36:58 and 38:26, to take a 2-1 lead. Elise Tilton and Selena Garzio tallied the goals for the Quakers.

Senior Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) had an opportunity to tie the game shortly after Penn's two goals, with a breakaway, but she was unable to slip the ball past Penn goalkeeper Liz Mata.

Brown again had chances for the equalizer at 14:23 when senior Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) rifled a shot off following a penalty corner. At 57:54, the Bears were awarded a penalty stroke. Junior Lucy Green (Providence, R.I.) stepped up to the line but her shot was batted down by Mata to preserve the 2-1 win for Penn.

In goal, freshman Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) stopped eight shots on the day for Brown while Mata saved six for Penn.

Penn registered 10 shots in each half for a total of 20 on the day while Brown registered seven and four shots for an 11 shot game total. The Quakers also held the lead for penalty corners, with eight to Brown's four.

The Bears will play again tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 1, hosting Lehigh in their last home game of the season. The game will start at noon with a Senior Day ceremony being held prior.
