PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by No. 5 Quinnipiac, 4-0, on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium in both of the teams' first ECAC game of the season. With the loss, the Bears now stand at 0-3-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in the ECAC while the Bobcats improve to 5-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference.
To open the first period, the Bears had two quality chances to score with both junior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) and senior Kelly Micholson (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) getting off shots in the slot. Quinnipiac later responded by adding its first tally of the game at 8:03 by Melissa Samoskevich. Junior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) recorded 13 saves in the period.
In the second period, Taylar Cianfarano and Nicole Brown scored in the stanza for the Bobcats at 8:52 and 13:27, respectively, to take a 3-0 lead. Towards the end of the period, junior Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) had an opportunity to score but her shot was turned away by Bobcat goalie Sydney Rossman.
Cianfarano added her second goal of the contest at 18:17 of the third period to close out the scoring and give Quinnipiac a 4-0 win.
The Brown penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4 on the night, including 2-for-2 in the third period, against a tough Quinnipiac offense. On the power play, the Bears were 0-for-1.
For the game, Elvin made a season-high 33 saves in net while Rossman recorded three stops for Quinnipiac.
"We just played one of the top team's in the country and they certainly showed us why they are ranked so high," said head coach Bob Kenneally '90. "However, I am so proud of the women on our team. They never gave up, played with pride and their effort never wavered."
The Bears will play again tomorrow (Sat., Oct. 31), hosting Princeton at Meehan Auditorium for a 4:00 p.m. game.
