BOSTON – Harvard's Michael Innocenzi scored the only goal of the contest midway through the second half as the Brown men's soccer team fell to the Crimson, 1-0, Saturday night at Jordan Field.
Brown dropped to 6-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Ivy League, while Harvard improved to 5-4-2 on the season and 3-0-0 in the league.
Evan Mendez made four saves for the Crimson to pick up the victory. Brown keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) stopped two shots on the other end.
In an evenly matched first half, neither team could find the back of the net, as Harvard held a slight edge in shots, 5-4.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Harvard jumped on the scoreboard at 67:12. Michael Innocenzi sent a cross in front of the goal to Andrew Chang, who drilled the lower left corner of the net for the one-goal advantage.
Brown put pressure on the Crimson defense with 10 minutes remaining, starting with a pair of strikes from Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) and Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.), but the first attempt was blocked and the second was corralled by Mendez to preserve the lead.
Harvard kept the Bears to without a shot on goal the rest of the way as the Crimson held on for victory.
Whalen paced the Bears with three shots. Harvard outshot the Bears, 16-9, but Brown had more corner kicks, 8-6.
Brown returns to play on Saturday, Oct. 24 when the Bears visit Cornell at 4 p.m.
