Spear Earns High Point Rider, Equestrian Wins Home Show in Season Debut

WARREN, R.I. – Brown University equestrian won high point college with the most overall points out of 11 schools, and junior Samantha Spear took home reserve high point rider honors in the team's season opener and only home show of the season at Windswept Farm on Sunday.
Celebrating its 20th season as a varsity program and head coach Michaela Scanlon's 20th year as the team's head coach, the Bears tallied 40 points as a team to distance themselves from their Zone 1 Region 1 competitors.
Spear (Chester Springs, Pa.) won both of her classes in intermediate flat and intermediate fences prior to competing in a written question-off to gain high point rider status. She pointed out of both intermediate flat and fences, moving up to the open categories, and qualified for the Zone 1 Region 1 Regionals in March.
Four other Brown riders garnered blue ribbons on the day, as sophomores Caroline Marks (Seattle, Wash.) and Lily Hertling (Paris, France) each won her class in novice fences while sophomore Anna Seto (Barrington, R.I.) claimed first in her class in advanced walk-trot-canter, and senior Noel Park (Baton Rouge, La.) placed first in her walk-trot class.
Starting the day with open flat, sophomore point rider Sara Nordstrom (Seattle, Wash.) paced the Bears in the division with a second-place finish in her debut show with Brown. Junior captain Kabisa Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) placed fourth in her class while senior Tess Carter (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Sydney Munro (Phoenixville, Ariz.) each notched sixth-place finishes.
In intermediate flat, Spear gained one of her blue ribbons while senior captain and point rider Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) garnered a second-place finish. Fellow senior captain Elena Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.) came in fifth place in her class. In novice flat, Hertling, the point rider, finished second in her class, and Marks came in third.
Moving to fences, Nordstrom placed second in her class to lead the Bears in he open division. Carter and Baughen, the point rider, each came in third in her class while senior Sophia Cohen (Greenwich, Conn.) placed fourth.
In intermediate fences, Spear earned her second blue ribbon while Buchsbaum, the point rider, finished fourth in her class. Marks and Hertling, the point rider, each won her class in novice fences with Marks providing important defense.
Finishing the day with walk-trot-canter and walk-trot, Seto, the point rider, garnered her blue ribbon with a first-place finish in her advanced walk-trot-canter class, and senior Tori Sasaki (London, England) placed fifth in her class in the division. In beginner walk-trot-canter, sophomore Elizabeth Rao (Andover, Mass.) placed third in her class.
Concluding the show with walk-trot, Park, the point rider, captured her blue ribbon while sophomore Keri Brooks (Yigo, Guam) placed fourth in her class in her debut horse show at any level.
Next, Brown returns to action at the Becker IHSA Show on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Becker College Equestrian Center in Paxton, Mass.
