BALTIMORE – The Brown women's basketball team scored its second road victory of the season after surviving a late second half rally in a 59-52 win over Morgan State at Hill Field House on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Brown improves to 5-8 and records back-to-back victories for the first time this season, while Morgan State drops to 3-11 with the loss.
Senior captain Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) paced the Brown offense for the third consecutive game with 20 points, her third straight contest with at least that figure. With a 6-of-8 shooting performance from long range, Bikofsky has now connected on 16-of-29 attempts from behind the arc over the last three outings (.552).
Brown also got solid contributions from Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio), who both scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) had eight points and a game high six assists, while Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) hauled in a game high seven rebounds.
Leading by 21 points, Brown had to withstand a 32-11 run from the host Lady Bears over a 10-minute span that saw Morgan State draw within three points at 55-52 on Braennan Farrar's trey with 2:08 to play.
Jordin Alexander's (Fishers, Ind.) steal and Sharpe's ensuing layup with 55 seconds left gave Brown a five-point cushion, prior to Bikofsky sealing the game with two free throws in the final seconds.
After Morgan State started out hot from behind the arc, the Bears responded to grab a lead they would not relinquish on the strength of Bikofsky's 4-of-4 performance from long range in the opening half. A 10-0 run after Morgan State lead 6-3, paced Brown to a 13-6 cushion at the 16-minute mark.
In a display of solid team basketball, Brown posted 10 assists on 12 of their first half field goals, led by Reilly who boasted five of those helpers. The freshman also gave Brown its largest lead of the half at 14 with a layup with 1:16 to play.
White's jumper at the buzzer gave Brown a 34-21 entering the locker room.
Farrar led Morgan State with 19 points, while Zuri White brought down 14 rebounds for the hosts. Brown held Morgan State to 28.3-percent shooting from the field in the team's best defensive performance of the season.
The Bears will enjoy a 12-day layoff between games, returning to action on Friday, Jan. 16 for the Ivy League opener at Yale.
