
Columbia's Second Half Surge Takes Down Brown, 86-65

New York, N.Y. – Columbia freshman guard Kyle Castlin scored a career high 21 points and added a team high nine rebounds to lead the Lions to an 86-65 win over Brown at Levien Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League, while Brown tumbles to 9-12, 0-4 in Ivy play.
For the second straight game, Brown hit a scoring drought late in the game with Columbia holding Brown to just four points in the final 9:05, while out-scoring the Bears by a 25-4 margin.
Brown had all five of its starters score in double figures, but couldn't overcome the Columbia bench, who outscored the Bears, 22-4.
Brown junior forward Cedric Kuakumensah broke out of a three-game slump with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while also blocking three shots. Sophomore guard Tavon Blackmon also scored 13 points and added six assists for the Bears.
Bears' sophomore JR Hobbie scored 12 points, sophomore Steven Spieth 11 points and senior Rafael Maia 10 points for the Bears.
Castlin's 21 points came on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Maodo Lo had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Columbia, while Luke Petrasek chipped in witrh 14 points.
The Bears led by as many as seven points in the opening half, 26-19, on a trey by sophomore Hobbie with 8:29 remaining.
With the Bears holding a 28-24 lead at the 5:38 mark, Columbia connected on back-to-back treys to fuel a 10-1 spurt and pull ahead by a 34-29 margin with 2:27 left on a lay-up by Castlin.
Trailing 39-35 at the half, the Bears battled back to tie the game, 50-50, five minutes into the second half on a Hobbie trey. Columbia scored eight of the game's next nine points to pull ahead, 58-51, on a Steve Frankowski trey.
Blackmon's floater in the lane pulled the Bears to within a point of the Lions, 61-60, at the 9:05 mark of the second half.
The Lions quickly recovered by out-scoring the Bears, 18-3, with Lo hitting a trey to give Columbia a 79-63 lead to put the game away.
Brown returns home next Friday, February 6 to host three-time defending Ivy League Champion Harvard. Tip-off at the Pizzitola Sports Center is 7pm.
