HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) tied the game midway through the third frame, but Trevor Moore scored all three of his goals in the final period as the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 11 Denver, 5-3, to close out the Dartmouth Ledyard Classic on Saturday at Thompson Arena.
Brown moves to 3-10-0 on the season, while Denver improves to 11-5-1 overall. No. 15 Boston College and host Dartmouth will play in the championship contest on Saturday night.
Senior Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine's, Ontario) and rookie Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) gave the Bears a 2-0 lead, but the Pioneers ended the second period with consecutive tallies to even it up, 2-2, heading into the third. Moore posted a hat trick in the third, including two straight after Lappin's equalizer to secure the victory.
Sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 30 stops in net for the Bears, while Tanner Jaillet registered 17 saves for the Pioneers in the win. Lafferty had two points behind one goal and one assist. Brown won the battle for blocked shots, 23-7, including seven from Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia).
After Brown killed off back-to-back penalties midway through the opening period, the Bears took advantage of their first power play of the game when de Concilys scored at 16:28 for his second tally of the season. Lafferty skated behind the net and into the left circle, before sending an impressive pass into the slot, where de Concilys rifled a low slap shot into the back of the net for the lead, 1-0.
Brown outshot the Pioneers in the opening period by a 10-7 margin.
Brown carried over its momentum into the second period, highlighted when Lafferty scored at 3:44 for his first collegiate goal to give the Bears a two-goal lead. Pfeil started the play in the defensive end when he hit Lafferty with a pass in the neutral zone. From there, Lafferty cruised into Denver territory and blasted a shot into the top left corner for the advantage, 2-0.
Denver answered back later in the period with consecutive goals to even the score. Ty Loney put the Pioneers on the board at 13:52 when a re-directed a shot past Ernst to trim the deficit to 2-1. Danton Heinen notched the equalizer at 18:31 with a backhand in front to make it 2-2 at the second intermission.
The Pioneers took the lead just 1:18 into the third period when Trevor Moore sent a wrist shot over Ernst's shoulder to make it 4-3.
Nevertheless, Brown continued to battle, as Nick Lappin evened the score with 8:36 left in the period. Rookie Tim Lappin (Saint Charles, Ill.) fought for possession behind the net and eventually gained enough space to send a pass right in front of the net, where Nick Lappin was all alone and beat Jaillet to make it 3-3. Junior Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) also earned an assist on the play.
Denver bounced right back, however, starting when Moore notched his second goal of the period on a breakaway at 13:39. Moore also added an empty netter at 19:44 to seal the win.
