NEW YORK – Despite a valiant effort, the Brown men's swimming and diving team dropped a tough 168-124 decision to Columbia in Ivy League dual meet action on Saturday at Uris Pool.
Brown falls to 1-4 in Ivy dual meets this season, with meets against remaining league foes, Cornell and Yale to follow over the next two weekends.
"Our men came out flat the first half of the meet, but I am proud of the way we adjusted and raced the second half," said Head Coach Chris Ip.
After the Bears grabbed second in the 200 Medley Relay, freshman Grant Casey shined in the 1,000 Free as the North Attleboro, Massachusetts native won the event with a mark of 9:30.76. Teammate Cory Mayfield (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) boasted a third place finish in the event (9:34.15).
Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.), another Brown rookie, placed second in the 200 Fly before Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and Jeffrey Strausser (Lafayette, Calif.) nabbed second and third respectively in the 100 Free event.
The 200 Back saw similar success from the Bears, this time from Willy Lee (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Max Bley-Male (Portland, Ore.) who finished just .14 apart to finish second and third.
The highlight of the afternoon came in the 100 Fly, where Strausser, Brendan Woo (Wyckoff, N.J.), Alexander Treil (Needham, Mass.), and Joshua Daniel (Vigie, St. Lucia) secured the top-four positions.
The day's events concluded with Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.), Nee, Alex Pascal (Longmeadow, Mass.), and Strausser posting an impressive mark of 3:07.64 in the 400 Free Relay.
The Bears return to action next Saturday for a senior day celebration against Cornell at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
