
Men's Hockey Downs No. 13/14 Providence, 5-3, to Claim Mayor's Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine's, Ontario) scored a pair of goals and sophomore Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) made 46 saves to lead the Brown men's hockey team past No. 13/14 Providence College, 5-3, to claim the 29th Annual Cup on Saturday at Schneider Arena.
Brown improved to 4-11 overall, while the Friars dropped to 14-7-1 on the season.
The two teams split the home-and-home series after the Friars picked up a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday, but Brown won the Mayor's Cup due to goal differential. Senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) gave the Bears a two-goal lead in the third period to ultimately decide the Mayor's Cup victory, bringing the trophy back to College Hill for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
In addition to de Concilys, who also added an assist for the three-point performance, Lorito, Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) and Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, Colo.) scored for the Bears. Jon Gillies made 15 saves and allowed four goals for the Friars, before giving way to Nick Ellis, who stopped 10 shots. Steel stopped 20 shots in the third period to highlight the career effort in net.
Brown scored back-to-back goals within a 61-second span for a 2-0 lead late in the first period. The Bears opened up the scoring with a power-play goal at 15:25, when de Concilys buried a one-timer from the slot on a feed from rookie Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) to give the visitors the advantage. Jacobson was also credited with an assist on the play.
Nick Lappin padded the early lead just over a minute later at 16:26, as he glided in front of the net, waited for the right opportunity and knocked home the backhand for his third goal in as many contests. Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) and Tyler Wood (Manchester, Mass.) picked up assists on the play.
Brown held a 15-12 edge in shots after the first period.
The Bears carried over their momentum into the second period as de Concilys and Jacobson rattled off consecutive tallies for the four-goal lead. De Concilys recorded his second goal of the game at 5:19, when he tapped in a rebound after Wood's shot from the point. In addition to Wood, Lorito also earned an assist on the play.
Jacobson added a power-play goal less than one minute later at 6:12 for his second of the season to make it 4-0.
Nevertheless, Providence answered right back as Noel Acciari scored at 7:42 to put the Friars on the board. PC added two more goals late in the period as Ross Mauermann and Mark Jankowksi trimmed the deficit to one at the second intermission.
After Brown successfully killed of a five-minute major early in the third period, Lorito scored at 13:43, when he circled behind the net into the high slot and snapped a wrist shot past Ellis to give the Bears a two-goal lead and secure the Mayor's Cup victory.
Brown was 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Friars were 0-for-3 with the extra man.
