LOWELL, Mass. – Shannon McSweeney made four saves and Meghan O'Donnell notched two goals as the Brown field hockey team won for the second time in as many days with a 2-1 triumph over UMass-Lowell at Cushing Field on Sunday.
"We had some really nice play from our back field today," said head coach Jill Reeve. "It was a true team effort against a talented UMass-Lowell squad and I'm proud of what our team has been able to produce this weekend."
O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) got the Bears on the board just over 15 minutes in as she flipped a shot up high over goalkeeper Kelsey Federico to put Brown up 1-0. Despite putting up an 8-1 shots advantage in the opening 35 minutes, the Bears weren't able to extended their lead past 1-0. Bianca Jones got the Riverhawks even at the 42:47 mark with her fifth strike of the season, the first goal McSweeney had surrendered in over 112 minutes this season.
After a deadlock for over 10 minutes, O'Donnell struck again for her third goal in two days as her backhand shot found the back of the net to give the Bears a 2-1 lead with under 20 minutes to play. The Riverhawks had their chances to net the equilizer down the stretch but McSweeney stood tall as Brown held on and improved to 2-0 in 2014.
Junior Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) led the Brown attack with four shots on goal while Jones landed three shots on the Brown net on Sunday.
The Bears return to action next Sunday as they will play host to Georgetown on Goldberger Family Field.
