PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A four-goal second half outburst broke a scoreless tie and propelled the Brown field hockey team to a decisive 4-1 victory over Georgetown on Sunday at Goldberger Family Field. With the win, the Bears improve to 3-0 in 2014 while the Hoyas drop to 2-3 on the season.
Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made three stops to move to 3-0 this season while Rachel Skonecki stopped eight Brown bids to drop to 2-2.
After a tightly contested but scoreless opening 35 minutes, the Brown offense was firing on all cylinders in the second as they tallied four consecutive goals over a 21-minute span. At 38:03, tri-captain Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, N.J.) fired home a shot from the top of the arc off a penalty corner to put Brown up 1-0. Christus followed that up on Meghan O'Donnell's (Winchester, Mass.) fourth tally of the season, as her initial shot was cleaned up by O'Donnell at 47:53.
Just five minutes later, junior Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) cashed in on a feed from Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.) to give the Bears a 3-0 cushion. After a sizzling shot that rang the crossbar minutes earlier, Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) fired home her first goal of the season off an assist from Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, B.C.) with just over 10 minutes to play.
Leading 4-0 with the clock expiring, the Bears looked primed for their second shutout of the season, but it wasn't meant to be as Emily Weinberg put the Hoyas on the board off a penalty stroke with just 19 seconds to play.
Brown will return to action next weekend, hosting Columbia and Sacred Heart on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
