PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Meghan O'Donnell's goal and an assist and Shannon McSweeney's six-save shutout paced the Brown field hockey team to a season-opening victory over cross-state rival, Bryant, on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field.
Brown improves to 1-0 as they recorded a win in a season opener for the first time since the 2006 season. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-4 overall after suffering a 3-2 setback to Harvard on Friday night.
With temperatures approaching 90 degrees, the Bears got off to a sluggish start in the opening 20 minutes as they failed to record a shot on target in that span. Bryant's Rosie Bird tested McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) early and often on Saturday as the senior forward uncorked six shots on the afternoon.
Currently ranked third on Brown's all-time goal scoring list, O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) moved within six goals of tying Tara Mounsey '00 for the program record as she tallied her 30th career strike with just over five minutes to play in the half. O'Donnell found herself on a clear break away at Bulldogs goalkeeper Megan Hancock, slipping a low shot through the five-hole to put Brown up 1-0.
Brown wasted no time in extending its lead in the second half as junior Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.) tallied her second career goal off an O'Donnell penalty corner at 39:16. With Bryant looking to cut the deficit in half, McSweeney turned away the Bulldogs with several sprawling saves to keep the game at 2-0.
Brown freshman Katherine Kallergis (Lake Forest, Ill.) registered her first collegiate point as she assisted on sophomore Jaclyn Torres' (Andover, Mass.) first career goal with just over 12 minutes to play. The Bears stymied Bryant the rest of the way as McSweeney recorded her first shutout since blanking Holy Cross on Oct. 24, 2012.
The Bears are right back in action on Sunday as they travel to UMass-Lowell to take on the Riverhawks at noon.
