
Volleyball Drops Pair at SDSU-USD Challenge

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Brown volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to San Diego, 3-0, and San Diego State, 3-1, in the opening day of competition at the 2014 SDSU-USD Challenge on Friday in San Diego, California.
Brown stands at 0-2 to start the season, while San Diego moves to 3-1 and San Diego State improves to 1-3 overall. The set scores against USD were 23-25, 14-25 and 12-25, while the set scores against SDSU were 14-25, 20-25, 25-23 and 16-25.
In the season-opening match against San Diego, sophomore Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) led the way with seven kills, while senior Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) paced the Bears with 17 digs.
In the first set, the Toreros jumped out to a 13-6 lead, before the Bears cut the lead to three at 19-16 and then continued to chip away with three straight kills to pull within two at 24-22. Nevertheless, San Diego escaped with the final point to claim the opening set. The Toreros used 17 kills in the second set to move up 2-0 in the match, and then opened the third set with a 10-1 run to pave the way for the 3-0 victory.
In the second match of the day against SDSU, senior Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) paced the Bears offensively with 10 kills, while sophomore Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded 13 assists and Connor posted a match-high 23 digs.
After San Diego State claimed the first two sets, the Bears roared back with a 25-23 win in the third stanza. The Aztecs started off with a six-point lead, before the Bears battled back to even the score at 20-20, and then added to the four-point stretch to move out in front, 22-20. Brown held a two-point advantage the rest of the way until Lord sealed the win with a kill to give the visitors the victory and pull within one, 2-1, in the match.
However, the Aztecs answered back in the fourth set with a seven-point advantage at 11-4, and then cruised to a 25-16 victory to seal the match win.
The Bears return to action at the SDSU-USD Challenge on Saturday when they play Northwestern at 3 p.m. and Cal State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m.
