Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Providence in Season Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Brown volleyball team fought back on two separate occasions but ultimately fell in five sets to Providence in Friday's season opener in the Ocean State Cup.
The Friars (3-1, 0-0 Big East) jumped in front with a 25-16 win in set one before Brown (0-1, 0-0 Ivy) responded with a 25-20 win in the second set. After falling behind again, the Bears answered with a 25-22 win in set four before falling 15-9 in the decisive fifth set.
Freshman Elle Holley led all players with 16 kills in her collegiate debut, junior Fisayo Afonja added 15 while Sophia Wolfson had 12 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, and led the team with five blocks. Junior Julia Kakkis totaled 35 assists and had a team-high .714 hitting percentage.
The Friars jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back in the first set en route to the 25-16 win. Brown never trailed in the second set and tied the match by taking the frame 25-20.
After keeping the Bears at arm's length in the third set, Brown rallied once again to close out a back-and-forth fourth set with a 25-22 win. Trailing 11-7, Brown ran off five straight points and 11 of the next 15 to take an 18-15 lead. The Bears fell behind 20-19 before rattling off four straight, which included a pair of aces from Sophie Haskell. Two kills from Wolfson finished off the set for Brown.
The Friars controlled the fifth set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and did not allow the Bears to get within four points to finish off the win.
The Bears will continue action at the Ocean State Cup on Saturday afternoon against the host Rhode Island Rams. Start time is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
