PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two goals from Zoe Blake and three assists from Christina Freibott helped pace the Columbia Lions to a 4-0 win over the Brown field hockey team in the 2014 Ivy League opener on Saturday. The Bears suffer their first defeat of the season to drop to 3-1, while Columbia improves to 4-1 to move into first place in the Ivy League.

Brown netminder Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made five saves in the loss, while Kimberly Pianucci turned away all five Brown attempts on goal.

The Lions jumped on the board just under eight minutes in, as Blake fired home one of Columbia's four goals off of penalty corners to go up 1-0. The Lions converted on 4-of-13 penalty corners on the day and held a 13-6 edge in corners overall over the Bears.

The Brown defense held strong for the remainder of the half and nearly found the equalizer in the final moments with two corner attempts back-to-back, however Pianucci was up to the task.

Blake added her second marker of the game at 43:03 before Whitney Hartstone tallied her first goal of the season just under 10 minutes later to put the visitors up 3-0. A stout Lions defense prevented the Bears from getting many quality chances against Pianucci as Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) and Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) led the Brown attack with two shots on goal apiece.

With just over six minutes to play, Rebecca Pope gave the visitors a 4-0 lead off a penalty corner to conclude the scoring.

Brown returns to action tomorrow against Sacred Heart on Goldberger Family Field beginning at 1 p.m.
