PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence native Lucy Green tallied her first career goal on a penalty stroke in overtime to propel the Brown field hockey team to a dramatic 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday.

The Bears improve to 4-1 this season while the Pioneers drop to 4-4 as goaltender Shannon McSweeney made eight saves to earn her fourth triumph of the season. Mary Altepeter turned away five Bears shots to even her record at 4-4.

A tightly contested first half saw the Bears and Pioneers battle to a scoreless draw, not without some glorious scoring chances from both teams. Sophomore Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, B.C.) took a feed off a Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) corner and whistled it off the post as the game remained scoreless.

Both goalkeepers needed to be sharp in the second half as the offenses turned up the heat on each end. The Bears struck first at 49:34 as Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) hammered home a feed from Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.) to put Brown up 1-0. After ringing the post earlier in the half, the Pioneers finally got the equalizer they needed as Olivia Volpe cashed in at 53:52 to knot the game at one.

Bids by O'Donnell, Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, Md.), and Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) in the final moments appeared to give Brown a potential win, but the ball couldn't find its way to the back of the net.

As the teams entered the 7-on-7 overtime period, the Bears offense pushed forward and finally earned a chance to salt the game away as Lucy Green was tripped up in the circle, with a penalty stroke forthcoming. The sophomore beat Altepeter up high to give the Bears a thrilling win after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Columbia on Saturday.

Brown will return to action next Saturday with a noon matinee at Ivy League foe, Dartmouth.
