BOSTON – The Brown women's rugby team kicked off its inaugural season as a varsity club in grand fashion as they defeated the reigning Ivy League champions, Harvard, 24-15 at Cumnock Field on Saturday.
Brown struck first at the 19-minute mark as captain Oksana Goretaya (West Warwick, R.I.) found a crease from 20-meters out and powered in for the score. Sofia Rudin (Baltimore, Md.) succeeded on the conversion to put the Bears up 7-0.
Back-to-back trys for the Crimson propelled them to a 10-7, but the Brown forced a late first half turnover and made it count as Saskia Morgan (Pawtucket, R.I.), with help from Elisha Miles, went the distance in the waning seconds to put the Bears up 12-10 at the half.
Harvard regained a 15-12 cushion at the 56:16 mark, but Brown would not be denied on this day, scoring 12 unanswered points to open up a nine-point cushion on the host Crimson. Amber Reano (Bloomfield, N.M.) found a seam and went unnoticed right up the middle to put Brown up 19-15. Morgan struck again to account for the final Brown score as she teamed up with Goretaya to enter the try zone one last time on the afternoon.
Brown will return to action next Saturday as they travel to Philadelphia to battle the Penn Quakers.
