Coach Lars Tiffany's Brown men's lacrosse team will feature explosive attack and midfield units, veteran goalie play, and a young defense as the Bears vie for the Ivy League Championship after posting an 8-6 overall mark in 2013.
Tiffany's high scoring attack unit returns intact with sophomore Henry Blynn (27 goals), senior captain Sam Hurster (22 goals) and junior Nick Piroli (14 goals) accounting for 45-percent of the Bears offense in 2013. Sophomore Brendan Caputo is a solid midfield scorer (10 goals), while senior Steven Chmil is expected to be the engine that drives the midfield. Add sophomore attackmen Kylor Bellistri (6 goals) and Bailey Tills (6 goals), and junior middy Tim Jacob to the mix, and the Bears have several options to attack the cage.
Brown features two battle-tested goalies, sophomore Jack Kelly and senior Will Round, who split time a year ago. Kelly started nine games and is an athletic keeper, who posted a 9.30 goals against average and a 7-4 record. Round was a second team All-Ivy selection in 2012, and returns after posting a .571 save percentage.
Senior captain Phil Pierce is a two-year starter at close defense, who will anchor a young defensive unit that will feature junior Will Swindell, an outstanding man down defender, who had an outstanding fall, freshman long stick middy Larkin Kemp and freshman close defenseman Alec Tulett. A two-year starter, Pierce ranked 11th in the nation in caused turnovers as a sophomore and picked up 25 ground balls a year ago. Senior captains Dan Mellynchuk, a close defenseman, and man down specialist Peter Vivonetto will also provide leadership to the Bears' defensive unit.
