PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three Bears scored in double figures on Sunday, but an early 7-0 second half run propelled St. Bonaventure to a 58-56 win over the Brown women's basketball team in the Brown Classic Championship Game.
The Bears (2-7) shot 32.1-percent from the field while the Bonnies improved to 7-2 this season in shooting 37.3-percent.
Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) each posted 14 points on Sunday in garnering Brown Classic All-Tournament accolades. Hannah Little earned tournament MVP while teammate Nyla Rueter earned All-Tournament recognition for the Bonnies.
Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) chipped in 12 points and five boards for the Bears, while Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) tossed in a career high nine points and two steals.
After the team's combined for a 1-for-12 start from the field at the first media timeout, the Bears struck for a 9-2 run on the strength of buckets from Reilly, White, and Alexander to take a 14-7 lead.
Bikofsky connected on two first half treys, as the senior captain returned to the starting lineup after suffering an apparent injury in Saturday's win over Sacred Heart. After the Bonnies drew within three points at 22-19, Bikofsky cashed in with a three from the left wing to run the Brown lead back up to six.
Four consecutive free throws from White gave Brown a 29-23 entering the locker room.
For the third consecutive contest, the Bears struggled to open the second half, this time allowing a quick 7-0 run from the Bonnies to give the visitors just their second lead of the game at 30-29.
After one of Ellise Sharpe's (Tipp City, Ohio) three steals, Natalie Ball's (Orlando, Fla.) jumper gave the Bears a three-point cushion at 38-35.
Crucial contributions down the stretch from St. Bonaventure's Little and Katie Healy gave the visitors its largest lead of the game at five with 3:49 to play.
Trailing 57-53, Bikofsky came off the bench and cashed in with a trey to cut the deficit to one with eight seconds to play. The Bonnies' Gabby Richmond hit 1-of-2 from the line to go up 58-56, before Alexander's desperation heave at the buzzer was wide, securing the win for St. Bonaventure.
Brown returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 21 for a non-conference tilt against Fairleigh Dickinson beginning at 1 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
