PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jordin Alexander netted a game high 21 points and Ellise Sharpe registered seven points, five steals, and four assists as the Brown women's basketball team raced past Sacred Heart, 66-56 in day one action of the 2014 Brown Classic.
The Bears (2-6) snap their six-game losing streak while the Pioneers suffer just their second defeat of the season to drop to 4-2.
Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) reached the 20-point plateau for the fourth time this season as the junior shot 7-of-14 from the field, while Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) matched a career high with four assists in providing a spark off the bench.
Rebecca Musgrove chipped in with 10 points and four assists, while Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) and Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) each netted eight points for the Bears. Natalie Ball (Orlando, Fla.) matched a career and season high with 13 rebounds in 22 minutes, giving the Bears a strong presence on the glass.
Megan Reilly, the freshman, started the Bears off with their first five points of the contest as the teams battled neck-and-neck, with neither squad opening up a lead larger than four.
With the Bears trailing 29-25, an 8-0 run, sparked by Bikofsky's theft with under five seconds left, gave Brown a 33-29 entering the locker room.
Much like Wednesday night's contest at Rhode Island, the Bears faced an 8-0 run as Sacred Heart began the half sizzling from the field on the strength of buckets from Allisa Tarsi to give the visitors a 37-33 cushion.
From there, Alexander took over for the Bears as she began her string of 16 second half points as Brown opened up a 51-43 lead. Freshman Kennedy Martin chipped in with four points and four crucial rebounds in nine productive minutes for the Los Angeles native.
With the Pioneers mounting a late charge, cutting the Brown lead to six points, freshman Janie White's (Clarksville, Tenn.) clutch trey with 2:14 to play gave Brown a comfortable nine-point cushion.
Key free throws in the final moments from Alexander and Musgrove sealed the game for the Bears and secured the team's first win since the season-opener at Vermont on Nov. 15.
Brown will face the winner of Saturday's Drexel/St. Bonaventure contest on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Brown Classic Championship Game.
