PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A total of seven different players found the back of the net for the Dutchmen as the Brown men's hockey team fell to defending national champion Union, 7-1, in ECAC action Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moves to 2-8-0 overall and 0-7-0 in conference play, while the Dutchmen improve to 8-6-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the ECAC.
Senior Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the lone tally for the Bears, while Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) paced the team with four shots and three blocked shots. Colin Stevens recorded 22 stops in two periods to earn the win, while Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) made 35 saves in net for the Bears.
Union jumped on the board at 10:18 in the opening period. After Mike Vecchione won a faceoff in the offensive zone, Sebastien Gingra rifled a shot from in front of the blue line, before Vecchione redirected the shot into the net for the early lead, 1-0.
Union scored again less than two minutes later during four-on-four play at 12:45 in the first stanza. Max Novak won a faceoff in the right circle, kept control of the puck and quickly sent a pass in front of the net, where Daniel Ciampini tipped in a shot before Steel could react to lift the visitors in front, 2-0. Union led in shots, 15-13, in the opening 20 minutes.
The Dutchmen added two more goals in the second half to move ahead, 4-0. Gingras scored just over four minutes into the period, as he received a pass from Ryan Scarfo and took a shot from the point that travelled through traffic and slide behind Steel and into the back of the net.
Roman Ammirato notched the second of the period at 8:40 with a backhand from the left circle to give the Dutchmen the four-goal advantage at the second intermission.
Brown ended the second period on a positive note, setting up in the offensive zone to put continuous pressure on Stevens, before Max Willman drew a hooking penalty at the horn to give the Bears a power play opportunity at the start of the third period.
Nevertheless, Brown committed a penalty early in the power play, before Matt Wilkins scored during the four-on-four at 1:25 to give the Dutchmen the five-goal advantage.
After Union added a pair of power-play goals, Harlow put the Bears on the scoreboard as he recorded his second tally of the season, connecting on a feed from Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) in front of the net. Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) was also credited with an assist on the play.
Brown returns to action tomorrow when they play host to Rensselaer at 4 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men's hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
