PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four different players scored for the Bears and sophomore goaltender Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made a career-high 39 saves as the Brown men's hockey team downed Rensselaer, 4-2, in ECAC play Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown improves to 3-8-0 overall and 1-7-0 in ECAC action, while the Engineers drop to 6-11-1 on the season and 4-4-0 in conference play.
Senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) scored the game winner, while Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) and Joe Prescott (Norwell, Mass.) scored one goal apiece. Rookie Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) registered a pair of assists.
Ernst picked up his second win of the season, while Scott Diebold made 22 saves on the other end.
Brown opened up the scoring just 52 seconds into the contest when Jacobson notched his first tally of the season. Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) started the play when he carried the puck through the neutral zone and hit rookie Tim Lappin (Saint Charles, Ill.) on the right side. Lappin sent a centering pass that bounced off Diebold's pad, before Jacobson scored the one-timer to make it 1-0.
After consecutive Brown penalties, the Bears managed to hold off the Engineers during the five-on-three, but the visitors took advantage of the ensuing power play when Jacob Laliberte scored at 3:33 to even the score, 1-1.
Rensselaer's lead did not last long, as Naclerio scored less than one minute later at 4:04. After Mark McGowan's missed shot wrapped around the boards, Naclerio picked up the puck and skated all the way down the left side and into the offensive zone, where he snapped a quick shot past the reach of Diebold to put the home side on top, 2-1, at the first intermission. Brown outshot the Engineers, 2-1, in the opening stanza.
Rensselaer roared back with an offensive burst in the second period, outshooting the Bears by a 17-7 margin, but Ernst came up with several timely saves to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Brown continued to fight and added another tally with 90 seconds remaining in the second to build a two-goal lead at the second intermission. Lafferty fought for position and dug out the puck in the corner, before finally sending a pass out to Lorito, who rifled a shot from in front of the blue line to give the Bears the 3-1 lead.
Prescott gave the Bears a 4-1 lead at 7:13 in the third period. After Lafferty won a faceoff in the offensive zone, rookie Josh McArdle (Roscoe, Ill.) blasted a shot from the point, but the puck hit Prescott's shoulder, fell behind Diebold and into the net.
Rensselaer trimmed the deficit to two when Jake Wood scored at 16:38, but it was not enough, as Ernst stopped 14 shots in the period to secure the victory.
Brown returns to action in 2015 with a pair on non-conference games at the Dartmouth Ledyard Bank Tournament. The Bears will play Boston College (1/2) and Denver (1/3).
