AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) broke the Joseph R. Rogers Jr. pool record in the 200 Yard Butterfly to lead the Brown men's swimming and diving team to a 173-125 dual meet win over UMass on Saturday.
First-year Head Coach Chris Ip's squad had strong performances across the board the Bears.
"Our first dual-meet is always a great baseline for where we are as a program and what we need to do to prepare for our next meet," said Ip. "Overall, I was very happy with our effort today. We did a great job performing as a well-balanced team with seniors all the way down to freshmen contributing some big performances. It was also great to see both the men's and women's teams supporting each other on deck throughout the meet."
Springman's 1:50.71 mark in the 200 Butterfly was a strong debut for the freshman as he shattered the pool record that has stood since 2003. The trio of Jeffrey Strausser (Lafayette, Calif.), Brenden Woo (Wyckoff, N.J.), and Alexander Treil (Needham, Mass.) paced the Bears with top-three finishes in the 100 Yard Butterfly.
Sophomore Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.) led Brown with three victories, claiming the 100 and 200 Yard Breaststroke and 200 Yard IM. The one-meter diving event saw Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) score a win for the Bears with 248.40 points.
Brown returns to action on December 5 as they play host to the Brown Invite held at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
