PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) scored with 51 seconds left in the game to trim the deficit to one, but it was not enough, as the Brown men's hockey team fell to Clarkson, 2-1, in ECAC Hockey action Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moves to 1-2-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in conference play, while Clarkson improves to 3-4-3 overall and 1-0-1 in ECAC play.
Sophomore Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) registered 26 saves in the contest, while Steve Perry made 27 stops on the other end for the win.
Clarkson jumped on the board at 8:29 in the opening period. James de Haas slid a pass through the slot to Gordan Boucher, who muscled a shot past Steel to put the visitors on top, 1-0. Paul Geiger was also credited with an assist on the play. Clarkson held a 10-8 edge in shots during the opening 20 minutes.
For the second time in as many nights, the Bears stepped up in the second period and killed off a five-minute major. Nevertheless, the Golden Knights responded with another goal midway through the period, when Geiger blasted a shot from the blue line at 10:15 to pad the lead, 2-0.
Brown had a scoring chance late in the second frame when xLorito was given penalty shot after he was tripped by Kelly Summers on a charge to the net, but Steve Perry denied the bid to preserve Clarkson's two-goal lead at the second intermission. Clarkson outshot the Bears in the second period, 11-8.
After a Clarkson penalty with 2:54 left to play, Steel was pulled midway through the power play, but the Golden Knights killed off the attack to give the Bears a one-man advantage. However, Lorito scored his first goal of the season three seconds after the end of the power play, when he scored on the rebound after a shot by Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) to pull the home side within one, 2-1. Freshman Dane Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) was also credited with an assist on the play.
Nevertheless, Clarkson held on during the final 51 seconds of the contest to seal the victory. The shots were even at 28 apiece.
Brown returns to action next weekend when they visit Harvard (11/14) and Dartmouth (11/15).
