PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) and sophomore Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.) notched back-to-back second-period goals to even the score, but St. Lawrence responded with three goals in the final period as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Saints, 5-2, in the ECAC opener for both teams Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moves to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in ECAC play, while the Saints improve to 5-3-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference action.
Sophomore Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) posted 25 saves in net for the Bears, while Kyle Hayton made 24 stops on the other end to earn the win.
Sean McGovern, who scored a pair of goals in the contest, opened up the scoring at 9:28 in the first period when he tipped in Woody Hudson's shot to give the visitors the early lead, 1-0. Ryan Lough added another goal less than three minutes later at 11:58, hitting home a one-timer from Chris Martin, to give the Saints the two-goal lead at the first intermission. The shots were even at seven apiece in the opening stanza.
Brown answered back with a pair of goals in the second frame, starting when Lamacchia scored on the power play at 7:22 for his first tally of the season. Freshman Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) took control in the neutral zone and sent the puck down along the boards behind the net, where he fought for possession, before fellow rookie Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) poked the puck into the crease for Lamacchia to tip in the goal.
Middleton then scored a short-handed goal at 12:48 for his second tally of the season. With St. Lawrence on the power play and attacking the net, freshman Tim Lappin (Saint Charles, Ill.) skated in the way of a charging Saint and swatted the puck out of the slot. Middleton chased down the puck and travelled along the boards, before he edged out a defenseman and beat Hayton for the equalizer.
Brown also killed off a five-minute major during the second period to preserve the tie game. SLU held a 15-10 edge in shots during the period.
After Tommy Thompson pushed the Saints in front with the go-ahead goal at the 5:46 mark in the third, Brown jumped on the power play and set up in the SLU zone, but Joe Sullivan poked away a pass and skated down for the unassisted short-handed goal at 12:29 to pad the lead, 4-2.
St. Lawrence added a fifth and final goal at 16:44 when McGovern registered his second tally of the contest to seal the victory. SLU outshot the Bears by a 30-26 margin in the contest.
