Staudenmayer Wins Weight Class to Pace Wrestling at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore Justin Staudenmayer won the 157-pound weight class to pace Brown University wrestling at the Navy Classic inside the Wesley Brown Field House on Saturday.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) took home the title after finishing fifth at the same event last year. Senior Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) snagged a third-place finish at 184 pounds while classmate Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) rounded out the Bears' placewinners with a fifth-place finish at 174.
Leading the Bears, Staudenmayer won four straight bouts to claim his weight class, topping Wisconsin's Jarod Donar, 6-1, Chattanooga's Austin Sams, 4-0, Ohio's Andrew Romanchik, 6-1, and The Citadel's Aaron Walker, 8-6.
Bernstein, who won his weight class at the event last year, earned three pins en route to his third-place finish this year. He notched a fall in 1:32 against George Mason's Andrew Thomas, a second in 2:40 against Kent State's Cory Campbell, and a third against Chattanooga's John Lampe in 2:15. He beat West Virginia's Jakob Scheffel, 8-4, in the third-place bout.
McDonald tallied five victories to take fifth place in the 174-pound weight class. He defeated Princeton's Steven Lehsinger, 5-3, Navy's Edward Schultz by major decision, 16-3, West Virginia's Ross Renzi, 3-1, Wisconsin's Frank Cousins, 5-1, and Navy's Jadaen Bernstein, 6-5.
Next, Brown will compete at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, from Dec. 5-6.
