Providence, R.I. - Senior guard JerShon Cobb scored 16 points, and sophomore forward Sanjay Lumpkin registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebound, to lead Northwestern to a 69-56 win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown falls to 1-1 with the loss, while Northwestern improves to 2-0 overall. Brown sophomore Leland King led all scorers with 17 points.
The difference in the game came on the backboards where Northwestern, from the Big 10, had a decided 39-25 advantage over the Bears.
"Northwestern was great tonight," said Brown coach Mike Martin. "They were well prepared and played with effort and energy. We had stretches of executing, but not enough to beat a good team as that."
The Bears were led by sophomore forward Leland King (Inglewood, CA), who scored a game high 17 points while grabbing five rebounds. Bears' senior forward Rafael Maia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Bears with eight rebounds, while scoring 12 points, while sophomore JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) chipped in with 12 points.
Brown junior forward Cedric Kuakumensah (Worcester, MA) was in foul trouble throughout and scored just two points. He also blocked one shot to tie the all-time Brown career record of 163 blocked shots held by Matt Mullery from 2006-2010.
Cobb connected on 3-of-4 treys and 5-of-5 free throws, while Lumpkin sizzled from the field, hitting 5-of-6 field goals. Wildcats' junior Tre Demps (11 points) and Scottie Lindsey (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Wildcats.
Northwestern led by as many as 11 points in the opening half, 29-18, on two free throws by Tre Demps with 4:16 left, before settling on a 36-26 lead at the half. Hobbie kept Brown in the game in the opening 20 minutes with nine points.
The Wildcats out-scored the Bears 17-6 to open the second half and jump out to a 21-point advantage, 53-32, and take control of the game.
The closest Brown got down the stretch was the final score on a King dunk at the buzzer.
The Bears travel north on Rt. 146 to battle Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., on Wednesday, November 19, at the Hart Center with tip-off at 7 pm. The two teams met last year in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
