Wrestling Earns Five Place-Winners at East Stroudsburg Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Brown University wrestling gained five place-winners in its first intercollegiate action of the season at the 48th Annual East Stroudsburg University Open at Koehler Fieldhouse on Sunday.
Sophomore Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) led the Bears with a second-place finish in the 157-pound weight class, finishing second at the event for the second year in a row.
Senior Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) came in fourth at 184 pounds after earning third in the same weight class at the ESU Open last season. Classmate Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) took a fifth/sixth place finish after winning the 125-pound weight class last year.
Sophomore L.J. Remillard (Honolulu, Hawaii) garnered a fifth/sixth place finish at 165 pounds, having taken sixth last year, while senior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) gained fifth/sixth at 174 pounds.
Three different freshmen also advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of their respective weight divisions – Michael Russo (Jersey, City, N.J.) at 125 pounds, Brendan O'Connor (Monroe, Mich.) at 133 pounds, and Austin Pfarr (Marysville, Ohio) at 197.
Staudenmayer won five consecutive bouts to reach the finals at 157, Bernstein took seven total bouts to finish fourth at 184, and McDonald also won five bouts to gain fifth/sixth at 174. McDonald took four bouts through technical fall.
Bernstein, Remillard, Russo, and sophomores James Corbett (Wantagh, N.Y.), Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.), and Richard Muniz (Corona, Calif.) all picked up wins through fall over the course of the tournament.
Next, Brown competes at the Navy Classic on Saturday.
