PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Head Men's Tennis Coach Bryan Koniecko has selected seniors Jacob Laser and Justin To as the team's captains for the 2014-15 season.
Laser, the Glencoe, Illinois native, returns to the Bears after recording a 2-1 record in doubles play last season, including a impressive win over No. 81 Brian Yueng/Nicky Lu of Harvard alongside of To.
"It's a great privilege to be the captain for Brown tennis. We have a very young team this year, so the responsibility is even greater than in past years," said Laser. "I've enjoyed growing each year with the team and am looking forward to taking the program to the next level through hard work and a strong commitment to excellence in all areas."
Despite the team's youth, Laser has noted the team's work ethic, practice habits, and he can see it paying off down the road.
"I can say that we have never worked harder as a team, there is an incredible environment everyday at practice and in the gym. The level of improvement has been incredible to witness and from that standpoint I can say we are building something special at Brown for years to come."
Playing alongside of Justin To for the previous two seasons, Laser is excited about what the senior brings to the team's No. 1 singles and doubles slot.
"Justin is an amazing captain who I am proud to be working with this year. He has really come into his own as captain and brings a unique skill set to the table. His work ethic, dedication, and organizational skills are a few reasons he will make for a great captain."
To (Hong Kong, China), enters his third season at Brown after spending his rookie campaign at Rice University in 2011-12. Last year, the senior combined for a 24-23 overall record, including a 14-12 mark in No. 1 doubles.
"I'm definitely optimistic about the spring season ahead as we are returning 4/6 starters and have five freshman that have shown great potential and have all demonstrated strong work ethics," said To. "The coaches are great this year and if we can continue to improve as a team leading up to the spring and especially the Ivies, which we have been doing, I like our chances."
To has valued his time with Laser since his recruitment to Brown for the 2012-13 season.
"Laser brings a great amount of enthusiasm to the team and I enjoyed playing doubles with him last year in Ivy play. He was my host when I came on my recruiting trip here at Brown. If he wasn't a tennis player he probably would have done pretty well in basketball with outstanding vertical leap."
Laser, To, and the rest of the Bears will be in action next at the ITA Regionals from Oct. 16-19 at the National Tennis Center in New York City.
