PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jaclyn Torres' goal 5:40 into the second overtime capped a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Brown field hockey team over Harvard on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears grab their first Ivy win this season to improve to 5-2 overall, 1-2 in league play while Harvard drops to 6-3, 1-2 in Ivy play.
McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) turned away 10 Harvard bids, including seven in the first half to keep the Crimson at bay. The senior goalkeeper improves to 5-2 this season while Harvard's Issy Davies made six saves in the loss to drop to 6-3.
Despite recording only two shots in the opening half, the Bears were able to cash in on both to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) notched both first half scores for the Bears, drawing within two goals of becoming Brown's all-time leading goal scorer.
At the 7:41 mark, O'Donnell took a long distance pass from Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, B.C) and broke alone on Davies, beating her five-hole to put Brown up 1-0. The senior struck again 10 minutes later, this time taking a feed from Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, N.J.) and finishing it off to give Brown a two-goal cushion. Harvard's Noel Painter responded with back-to-back goals eight minutes apart at the end of the half to draw the Crimson even at two.
Painter struck again at the 57:44 mark to finish off her hat trick and what appeared to be the game-winning goal. The Bears, despite mustering only three shots until the waning moments, found the equalizer with just 31 seconds to play. Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) put home a rebound off of O'Donnell's shot to tally her second strike of the season, stunning the Crimson at the end of regulation.
Brown carried the play in overtime, outshooting the Crimson 6-4 with glorious chances from O'Donnell and Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) that were denied by Davies. The teams entered the second overtime with the shootout looming, but sophomore Jaclyn Torres' put that thought to rest as she hammered home a pass from Rogers to give Brown a thrilling Ivy victory.
The Bears return to action tomorrow for a non-conference tilt against Siena beginning at 2 p.m. on Goldberger Family Field.
